~We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz.~

Welcome!
We are Ileana and Christian. Currently we live in Hamburg, Germany, because it is a seaport and we love pirates, sailing ships and the salty breath of the sea. Anyhow, we are always ready to move on. We're ready to conquer the world.

This blog is about everything we adore, especially the little things that make our lives more beautiful.
This blog is about fake mustaches, ladybugs, animal masks, peacock feather fans, fly agarics, smoking cigars, tattoos inspired by Hokusai and Carson Ellis, dogs dressed up for Halloween, jasmine in your hair, Pokémon T-Shirts, werewolves drinking piña coladas, topees, Buster Keaton's eyelashes, skulls, cherries, evening gowns.
This blog is about art, nature and style and how we fit (or don't fit) in between. This blog is about being heavily influenced by music and poetry.

But most of all this blog is about how to click your ruby slippers.

I'm late

I know I'm late, but this is the funniest thing I have seen in my life:

I must admit: Me too!

Please vote, even if it's raining

I just read about this University Of Georgia prof who found out that 1 percent of the voters stay home when it's raining on the day of the election. Rain ought to be especially bad for Barack Obama, because 2 1/2 percent of democratic voters stay home on a rainy day, says the professor.
So, please run through the rain (I would if I had the chance to vote for Obama), it'll be fun, you can have a big cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows when you're back home-

The Call of Cthulhu

It was a monster mash!
My little sister, her boyfriend, Christian and me had a fantastic pumpkin soup with an Asian flavor of coriander and garam masala.
We listened to some of the greatest vintage Halloween hits by Mel Tormé and John Zacherle, got dressed up and went to ride the rollercoaster in an amusement park that was decorated with millions of jack-o'-lanterns.
Christian was Cthulhu, H.P. Lovecraft's Great Old One-

"They were not composed altogether of flesh and blood. They had shape...but that shape was not made of matter. When the stars were right, They could plunge from world to world through the sky; but when the stars were wrong, They could not live. But although They no longer lived, They would never really die. They all lay in stone houses in Their great city of R'lyeh, preserved by the spells of mighty Cthulhu for a glorious resurrection when the stars and the earth might once more be ready for Them."

I went as the gigantic zombieladybug, best friend of Godzilla:

This year's fly agarics

Barkenhoff

Since I did a paper on him in school, I am an admirer of Heinrich Vogeler's work.
From the beginning, I fell in love with his paintings, his Art Noveau illustrations for books by Rainer Maria Rilke (who was a close friend and soulmate to Vogeler) and Oscar Wilde and last but not least with his idea of life and way of living.
It always fascinated me how Heinrich Vogeler used to create his own world, designed the house he lived in, formed the objects of his everyday life just how he wanted them to be and surrounded himself with inspiring people, other artists, poets and musicians. This consistency seems so appealing and worthwhile to me.

The "Barkenhoff" (it means "birch tree cottage") in Worpswede, where Vogeler lived and worked from 1895 to 1931, is just about 100 kilometers away from Hamburg, so Christian and I decided to visit it on a gorgeous autumn day. Gosh, what a beautiful place! I would love to have a cottage just like that one day, to live and to celebrate and to get inspired with all my friends there.
Look at Christian smoking in front of Barkenhoff and the painting "Sommerabend", which shows the same outside staircase and Heinrich Vogeler's wife Martha in the middle.

First day of autumn

So, it's autumn.
A bunch of freckles are all that is left of summer.
I haven't smelled this peculiar scent of dying leaves and longing yet, though. I am waiting.

Sarah Ogren's jewelry

Look at these pieces of jewelry by Sarah Ogren. You can buy them at her Etsy shop. I think they are marvelous. I would definitely go for the horsegirl. Or for the bunnybirdrider? Hm.

В яранге горит огонь

I've fallen completely for these old Soviet animated films.
Here's another one, a winter story from 1956 with wonderful images. They remind me of magnificent Russian lacquer art. The images are so amazing and speak for themselves, it really does not matter if you don't understand the language (like me). What a beautiful language, though.
I wish I could post every Russian film jewel there is, but please go ahead and hunt for yourself. There are plenty of jewels to find.

Чебурашка

Listen to the beautiful song performed by Gena the crocodile, best friend of Russian Soyuzmultfilm animated character Cheburashka (Чебурашка).

Clicking through YouTube, I found a whole bunch of great old Soyuzmultfilm clips. Take a look at this perfect Russian Winnie-the-Pooh. At the beginning of the movie, he sings an unbelievably enchanting little song. I'm deeply in love.

Little birds

I bought these metallic birdies in my favorite toy and candy shop in Munich and gave them to friends I met during one of the first warm days of the summer. I kept the one in the top left corner for myself, it's chirping on my blouse tonight.
You can get fake mustaches, little whistles to imitate all kinds of birds and some of the candy I loved in my childhood at that little shop, the "Brauseschwein". I highly recommend a visit!

Confessions of a glitter addict

I confess. I am totally addicted to anything that glitters.
I have boxes full of brooches and clip-on earrings and I have lost tons of paste gems while making my way through the night. If any of you ever found a tiny little rhinestone somewhere on the street, it was probably mine.

Don't you step on my cheap red shoes

These are my newest ruby slippers, very cheap shoes. I don't think I'm gonna wear them often since they won't last too long. I nevertheless hope they'll always carry me home.

Christian and me went to my sister's place yesterday to have some tasty Thai green curry and to watch a movie.
Christian looked really good, a little dressed up for the occasion. He told me he was wearing his black scarf and the velvet blazer because we were going to watch a ghost movie. Stands to reason, doesn't it?
(It was an Asian ghost story,"The Eye", it was okay, but a little too tragic at the end and not creepy enough for my fancy.)

Flashlightflower

It's a fabulous late summer's day, the air feels warm and soft and all you want to do is be a cat and warm your belly on a wall in the backyard.
We climbed some trees, saw a peacock walking its three little chicks in the park and some gigantic container ships at the harbor.
At the botanic garden, I found some pretty strange plants and many absolutely fantastic colors.
Look at this poisonous flower, it looks like a flashlight:

Lilian Harvey missing

I'm glad I don't look like esthetic surgery gone wrong anymore this morning. In fact, my lip looks pretty normal.
Today I'd like to show you a treasure I found on the flea market some time ago. It is a beautiful "Film Album", a collection of little black-and-white shots of movie stars from the 1930s. They used to hand out these photographs with cigarettes and people collected them neatly in their albums when smoking was still cool and belonged to the admired airs and graces of the stars.
There are a few film stars in the album who are still famous, like Marlene Dietrich or Greta Garbo, but there's a bunch of gorgeous persons who are long forgotten. It would be great to look all of these stars you never heard about up and watch some of the movies they are starring.
I have a box with more of these pictures in my kitchen which have beautifully dated technicolors.
There's only one picture missing in the album (if you have a movie tobacco card of Lilian Harvey at home, please tell me, maybe it's the missing one). I gave it to Christian as a present.

Priscilla

Ever woken up with a swollen lip?
I look exactly like Priscilla, Calimeros girlfriend. Maybe I'm allergic to nectarines, I had a similar mysterious lip thing going on the last time I ate one. Damn, I love nectarines!
Since I have to work tonight, it's probably the right time to wear one of these:
